Full course description

City Summer Youth Academy is for students ranging from incoming 6th graders through currently enrolled high school students. CSYA is underwritten by a generous grant from the Wells-Fargo Foundation.
 
Creative Drawing Exploration
 
Monday-Friday 7/17-7/21/2023, 1:00pm-3:30pm, online

This class gives students an opportunity to express themselves creatively through drawing, tapping into your own intuition and imaginationWe'll take our inspiration from unique real-world images, incorporating interesting colors, textures, and shapes. Students will learn basic drawing techniques while experimenting with representational and abstract concepts. There is no right or wrong in this class and no prior drawing experience is necessary! Join us and have some fun! 
 
This will be a live synchronous course. Students will need a computer or smart phone with webcam and microphone, internet and web streaming capacity, and the Zoom application installed to their device. 

MATERIALS LIST

basic drawing or sketch paper, a basic set of colored pencils, regular pencil (can be drawing pencils or basic No. 2 pencil), eraser, pencil sharpener

Instructor Bio:

Michelle (Shelley) Champlin is a professional teaching artist, compassionate facilitator, and intuitive living in Oakland California. Her passion lies in bringing opportunities for education, creative growth, and self-expression to the community–as well as creating space for people to contemplate and honor their experience. She also loves facilitating art-making experiences that allow folks opportunities to connect with themselves and their intuition/what feels right to them.  Her background includes working with a variety of populations including; professional adults, children, teens, retirees, LGBTQAI+ youth, and adults and youth who experience developmental disabilities. Earning her Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Inquiry, Interdisciplinary Arts with a visual arts emphasis at the California Institute of Integral Studies provided her time, space, and resources to delve deeply into her own truth, perspective, and process, both as an individual and as an artist–an experience that informs her work every day.
