The Natural History of Pinnacles and Fort Funston, California

Instructor: Peter Winch

This short program of lectures are a chance to get to know two of Central California's special places: Pinnacles National Park and Ft. Funston in The Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
The presentations will look at the geology and wildlife particular to the Pinnacles and Ft. Funston, especially the bird life. They will also focus on some of the conservation strategies and challenges peculiar to each of these places. (for example: The California Condor reintroduction at Pinnacles)

 

Instructor Bio: Peter Winch graduated from Plymouth University in England with an honors degree in Environmental Science.  After graduating he spent three years with the ocean conservation direct action group Sea Shepherd.  Peter has worked as a seabird biologist in Alaska, the Northwest Hawaiian islands, Mexico, Oregon and California for the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Biological Survey. He has been working as an education specialist for the Greater Farallones Association for 17 years, and as an interpretive naturalist for Oceanic Society Expeditions for 19 years, leading expeditions to the Farallon Islands, Florida, British Columbia, Belize and Baja California, Mexico.  He is a surfer, diver and a published author of “The Giant Ocean Coloring Book.”  Peter completed the Master Birding course at California Academy of Science in 2019.  He also volunteers for the Ocean Film Festival and does volunteer habitat restoration for the Golden Gate Audubon Society.
