In this 5-week course, we will read poems of affirmation and resistance from poets including Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, Claudia Rankine, and Danez Smith. We will consider how Black and non-Black poets create an anti-racist vision and sensibility. Drawing inspiration from these poems, we will write our own poems that participate in anti-racist dialogue. We will bring these poems into the public via social or physical media.
Workshops are taught online through Zoom and Canvas. Students will need a computer or smart phone with webcam and microphone, internet and web streaming capacity, and the Zoom application installed to their device. A device to capture images (digital camera, smart phone, or tablet, etc.) is helpful, but not required.
