In this 5-week course, we will explore poetry that engages with history. From the great epic poems to the lyrics of contemporary rappers, we will consider how writers place particular historical moments in our collective memory. Turning to our own place and time, how can we bear witness to history in our own poetry? Each week we will read closely, discuss, then write, refining our poetic voices as we read and share.
Workshops are taught online through Zoom and Canvas. Students will need a computer or smart phone with webcam and microphone, internet and web streaming capacity, and the Zoom application installed to their device. A device to capture images (digital camera, smart phone, or tablet, etc.) is helpful, but not required.
