DIY Cinema
 
Thursdays, 9/18 - 10/16/2025, 6:00-8:00pm with optional 60 minute Engagement Lab

Location: Online

Instructor: Michael Mersereau

Studying the aesthetic and technical expression of experimental media, students will utilize already existing tools around them to create their own short films and media. The class culminates in a video screening. Through this course, students will become knowledgeable about artists in experimental film and video, the application of sound in film, and digital programming for experimental film / media performance. The course meets a total of 4 weeks at 2 hours per session. Each class meeting combines the introduction to contemporary and historical artists, working in the moving image medium, technical instruction, and open lab.

Each student must bring a camera or phone, I provide extra cameras if needed.
 
Instructor Bio:
Michael Mersereau (b. 1977) is a media and projection artist based in Oakland, California. Mersereau’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at festivals and institutions such as Cordoba Lab in Oaxaca de Juarez, The Diego Rivera Anahuacali Museum in Mexico City, and Maison de la Culture Claude Léveillée in Montreal. Mersereau was faculty at Mills College and holds an MFA from Mills College and BFA from California College of the Arts.
