For five weeks, this enjoyable class will introduce you to the basics of Sogetsu Ikebana - the most innovative of Japanese floral design schools. Using a variety of plant and flower materials you will explore the dynamic use of line, mass and color. You will also learn many skills for bending, cutting and conditioning different branches and flowers. Ikebana deepens your appreciation of all plant materials, and offers a unique medium for self-expression through flowers. Continuing and advanced students also welcome. Come to the first class prepared to make an arrangement. For the first time student and on only the first session, the instructor will provide materials.
Each class includes a demonstration, practice time for your own work with assistance as needed, and an instructor-led review of all designs. Students bring their own flower and plant materials, and can apply for access to shop at the San Francisco Flower Market.
Some equipment is available for in-class use only. If you wish to purchase your own, the instructor will help you. Bring hasami or flower shears if you have them.
Materials:
Hasami (flower scissors$35 ) and textbook $30) are required and available the first class. Students bring their own floral materials each week, and can apply for access to the San Francisco Flower Market.
