Fall Vegetable Gardening

9/12-10/10/2026, Saturday, 10:00am-1:00pm

In this hands-on and in-person introductory workshop series, you can expect to be given the basic knowledge to start your own fall vegetable garden. The things you will learn will prepare you to plan, care for, and maintain a small city garden capable of growing seasonal vegetables and herbs. Some topics covered will include, soil health, selecting herbs and vegetables to grow, pest management, composting, and much more. By bringing your own cultural lenses, you will gain the confidence and knowledge to express yourself through the medium of gardening.
 
A materials fee is included to cover larger tools loaned by the department. Please bring your own hand tools, listed below.
 
This workshop will be held on campus in the Horticulture Department classrooms and gardens. Classes will be a mix of lecture/discussion and hands-on activities.
 
Materials list:

Required:

1. Way to take notes - notebook, laptop, etc.
 
2. Basic gardening gloves such as these or similar:  Gloves example
 
3. Bypass pruners/ snips. They can range in cost: Pruning tool A different Pruning tool


4 .Hori Hori, a digging knife and tool.Hori Hori example

5. Clothes and shoes that you are ok with potentially getting dirty and wet
 
 
 

Instructor Bio: 
I am an environmental science educator, and urban agriculturist, with 15 years of farming, land stewardship, and community organizing experience. I use my horticultural skills to drive social and cultural change, and create spaces for Black and Brown individuals to succeed. I was the former farm managers at Tenderloin People’s Garden and Alemany Farm. Additionally I teach middle school science, and other craft based workshops such as indigo dyeing.
