Full course description

Art in the Time of Grief
Wednesdays, 7/10-7/17/2024, 6:00-9:00pm

Instructor: Roberta Fudim

In this workshop, students will view and discuss works of art that reflect the power of grief as both a personal and political act. Grief takes many forms: we can grieve the loss of a loved one, or of independence, a loss of status or security, or the loss of nature and species. Together, we will explore art as a means to communicate and work with our own grief using collage and assemblage. We will work with existing materials that can operate as a symbol, or talisman and be transformed through a process of adding, erasing, marking, scoring, subtracting, superimposition. No specific materials are needed for this class; use what you have on hand or what you find yourself drawn to.

Instructor bio: Roberta Fudim is a San Francisco based artist. She has an MFA from California College of Arts and Crafts. Roberta's work addresses issues of social justice, women's stories and believes that the personal is political. She uses primarily found and repurposed materials and has a great fondness for already used canvases.
