Location: John Adams Center, room 312
Instructor: Lorraine Woodruff-Long
Reuse, repurpose, recycle -- and make! Learn how to deconstruct shirts from thrift or cast-offs, to get usable fabric for making a simple nine-patch quilt block. A great workshop for novice or experienced sewists/quilters and those interested in finding ways to sew and quilt more sustainably. The first portion we will learn to take apart shirts and prepare for cutting into pieces for quilting. The second portion we will learn to sew the nine-patch blocks together and explore how to use remaining small pieces for use in quilting.
Materials List:
• Students must provide and know the basics of their own working sewing machine.
• 3-5+ clean & washed used shirts. Ideally men’s shirts from thrift stores such as Salvation Army/Goodwill or your own used clothing. Bring at least one light, dark and a medium value shirt (at least 3 total – more is great!) Woven fabric only – no T-shirts.
• Thread for machine
• Sharp fabric scissors/shears
• 45” or 60” Rotary cutter
• 3”x18” acrylic ruler
• Portable cutting mat
• Sewing pins/pincushion or magnetic pin catcher
