Make a Quilt Coat! Part 1: Create custom, quilted yardage for a quilt coat

Wednesdays, 1/21-2/18/2026, 6:00-9:00pm.

Location: John Adams Center
Room 312

Instructor: Lorraine Woodruff-Long

Part 1, five 3-hour classes, will consist of creating the quilted fabric yardage needed to make The Elemental Coat by Teresa Coates. This class will be taking you step by step to make up to 3 ½ yards of quilted fabric to be used as the fabric for your quilt coat in Part 2. Using the “Confetti Quilt” improvisational quilt block technique, in 5 classes we will make a flimsy top and machine or hand-quilt it to use in Part 2. (Note: sewing both inside and outside of class will be required to complete the necessary yardage for Part 2.)

MATERIALS LIST:
• PATTERN:
• Teresa Coates pattern for “The Elemental Coat”. Purchase hard copy of pattern online
• FABRIC:
• Base Color: 3 – 4 yards of fabric for quilt top base color*
• Confetti Scraps: equivalent of approximately 1 yard of varied colorful scraps
Fabric recommendations: Quilt cottons (woven), lightweight denim
• Quilt Backing (will be the coat lining): 3-4 yards of quilting cotton fabric.
• BATTING:
• 3.5 yards white flannel or muslin: Recommend using white flannel or muslin to keep your coat lightweight and not too bulky. If you choose to use traditional quilt batting, choose a King Sized thin lightweight batting like a cotton/poly blend, bamboo or thin polyester.
• THREAD
• High quality 40-50wt quilt/piecing thread for your sewing machine, that matches your project from sources such as Aurifil, Superior Threads.
SUPPLIES LIST:
• Sewing Machine that is working and with which you are familiar using (i.e. how to thread, wind a bobbin, etc.)
• Rotary cutter/cutting mat
• Acrylic ruler to cut strips – whatever you use (3”x18” ruler)
• 6.5” acrylic block ruler (if you happen to have a 4.5” and a 2.5” acrylic block ruler, bring as well, but no need to go out and purchase.)
