Basic Improv Quilting: Part 2 "Finish Line"
Wednesdays, 10/23-11/20/2024, 6:00-9:00pm
Location: John Adams Center, room 312
Instructor: Lorraine Woodruff-Long
Students will learn how to make a completed quilt from a fabric quilt top "flimsy” and all the steps to turn it into a finished quilt or wall hanging. Students will learn about making a “quilt sandwich” with a top, batting and fabric backing. They will learn how to baste their quilt sandwich and the basics of quilting by machine and/or by hand. Finally, students will learn how to finish their quilt edge using a choice of binding techniques.
Materials List:
- Completed top for quilting - can be a “whole cloth” or a quilted, pieced quilt top
- Quilt batting large enough for quilted top (will discuss options in first class)
- Fabric backing for quilt back, large enough for batting/top (can be a sheet, or pieced fabric backing.)
- Students must provide and know the basics of their own working sewing machine.
- Thread for machine
- Scissors
- 45” or 60” Rotary cutter
- 3”x18” acrylic ruler
- Portable cutting mat
- Sewing pins/needles
Instructor Bio:
Lorraine Woodruff-Long is a self-taught quilter with a primary focus on color, improvisation, and recycled/repurposed fabrics. Her work has been juried into shows at the de Young Museum/San Francisco, the California Heritage Museum/Santa Monica, the International Quilt Festival/Houston, QuiltCon, and the Sanchez Art Center/Pacifica, among others.
