Basic Improv Quilting: Part 1 "Getting to the Top"

Wednesdays, 1/15-2/26/2025, (no class 1/29) 6:00-9:00pm.

Location: John Adams Center, room 312

Instructor: Lorraine Woodruff-Long

Learn the basics of “improv” quilting with creative freedom and without the restrictive rules that can overwhelm new (and even experienced!) quilters! In six sessions, students will learn the fundamentals of constructing a quilt and more than 6+ quilt blocks and techniques which allow learners to springboard into their own unique arrangements and creations. Students will complete a pieced “flimsy” top, ready to be quilted.

This class is for you if you are:
• A novice who has used a sewing machine but never made a quilt
• A quilter wishing to expand your creativity without use of a prescribed pattern
• Seeking weekly space & time for personal creativity and meeting others like you in a wonderful sewing space!

Materials List:
• Students must provide and know the basics of their own working sewing machine.
• Approximately 2-3 yards of various (can be in pieces) fabrics (woven, not knit, fabric.) (Students are encouraged to use repurposed materials including clothing, sheets, fabric from SCRAP-SF, etc.)
• Thread for machine
• Sharp fabric scissors/shears

• 3”x18” acrylic ruler
