Block Printing Foundations
 
Wednesdays, 9/30-10/28/2026, 6:00-9:00pm. 

Location: Ocean Campus, STEM building, room 212

In this 5 session course, students will learn foundational printmaking methods for linoleum block printing on paper and fabric. Using printmaking and textile histories for inspiration, students will develop skills in designing for the linoleum block medium, producing unique printing blocks and creating an edition of impressions on multiple materials. There will be a visiting guest artist in one session. The workshop will conclude with a final project where students produce a length of fabric and roll paper printed with a continuous pattern of their own design. The price includes a $25 materials fee and is open to all levels of experience.
 
Students need to bring a sketchbook, pencil, and a Sharpie marker.
 
Optional materials:
linoleum carving tool set, additional substrate materials (such as colored fabric) to print on.

Instructor Bio:

Whitney Humphreys  is a San Francisco Bay Area artist and teacher.  Her research-based, multi-media practice fuses collage with traditional printmaking, fiber art, and installation in works that address how visual culture and information technologies influence the production of gender identity. She graduated from San Francisco Art Institute’s Dual Degree program, receiving an MA & MFA, where she earned awards in Printmaking, Metal Sculpture and Thesis Writing achievements. She is currently a Resident Tattoo Artist at Black Serum in San Francisco and leads courses in printmaking and design at Bay Area community colleges. She has taught at schools including UC Santa Cruz, SF City College, and Berkeley City College. She has exhibited throughout the Bay Area and across the U.S., most recently with a collaborative exhibition entitled Seaming Apparitions at the Front Gallery in New Orleans alongside mixed media artist, Rebecca Mae Sexton.
