Watercolor in the SF Botanical Garden
Saturdays, 10/5-10/19/2024, 9:30am-12:30pm
Location: Botanical Garden, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco

Discover the joy in making visual recordings of experiences and sites in a sketchbook at the beautiful SF Botanical Garden. In this outdoor workshop, students will learn the fundamentals of art such as, form, color, composition, and perspective. Our visual renderings will be done quickly with a focus on improving basic visual art skills and building confidence. This workshop will begin with a demo, followed with time dedicated towards practicing these methods and to answer any individual questions.
Materials:
Any basic watercolor paint set (dry cake or tube) that has at least the primary colors.
IF you do not have a watercolor paint set then I recommend obtaining the following colors:
- burnt umber
- aureollin yellow or any transparent medium yellow
- yellow ochre
- cadmium red
- alizarin crimson
- ultramarine blue
- prussian blue
Brushes (Soft nylon, sable or any that is specifically for watercolor):
- #14 or higher Pointed Round
Dry Materials:
Pencil
Kneaded eraser
Plastic eraser
Straight edge ruler
Surfaces:
- A watercolor art journal (Cold Press, 140lbs or more and no smaller than 5"x 8").
Misc:
- If the watercolor paint set does not have a palette then you will need a portable palette like Mijello Airtight watercolor palette
- Rags or paper towels
- (1) Cup or jar to hold water
- (1) Roll of masking or painter's tape
Instructor Bio:
Joyce Nojima is a second-generation Japanese American born and raised in Santa Rosa, CA. She received her B.A. in Art Practice from University of California, Berkeley in 2003 and earned her MFA at University of California, Davis in 2014. She was an Affiliate Artist and Graduate Fellowship Program at the Headlands Center for the Arts. She was also a former studio artist at Root Division.
