Plein Air Painting in Oil Paint

Instructor: Alexandra Bailliere

Spend a spring Saturday learning how to paint en plein air in oil paint! In this 6 hour intensive class, we will learn the fundamentals of plein air painting using oil paint. All you need is a sense of adventure and excitement to paint outdoors - no prior painting experience is required, all levels are welcomed! Workshop artists may work in the medium of their choice - instructor demos will be done in oil paints.

Demos will include: how to do value study sketches of a scene then transfer to your painting surface, using a value underpainting to establish composition, painting with a minimal palette (and color mixing), using color value and painting techniques to establish a sense of space and perspective, painting natural elements (rocks, flowers, paths, trees), painting clouds and skies and painting bodies of water. There will be optional sharing and discussing of your paintings at the end of class.

A class materials list will be emailed ten days prior to the first class meeting. A plein air painting easel would be helpful for oil or acrylic painters but is not required.

Don't forget to pack your lunch- we'll take a 30-minute break midday.

Address and map for painting location (likely northern SF) will be emailed along with materials list prior to each session.
