Learn to Draw: A Path into Mindfulness

Tuesdays, 9/23-10/14/2025, 6:30-9:30pm

Location: Ocean Campus, Visual Arts 102

Instructor: Linda Hope

The practice of drawing can bring one’s awareness into present time as completely as any other meditative technique! Deep focus and a sense of calm are easily attained using processes of observational drawing, and simple self-selected subject matter. This workshop would be perfect even if you have never drawn nor practiced “mindfulness” before. After basic mindfulness sessions, guided and timed exercises are introduced, with basic drawing media. Exercises start at the fundamental level, and gradually increase in depth and complexity as confidence and concentrated focus improve. Experience the intersection of attentive observation and clarity of purpose and mind!

Materials:
  • 9 x 12” or 11 x 14” Sketch Book with 50-65 lb. paper. The heavier the paper, the more durable the surface will be.
  • Vine Charcoal (softest available - 4 to 5 sticks. Try to get thick sticks because they are easier to hold)
  • Compressed Charcoal pack with #2B, #4B, and #6B sticks
  • Charcoal pencils  #4B and #6B (Try to get the peel down variety  because they are easier to “sharpen.”)
  • 4B and 6B Graphite drawing pencils
  • Ebony pencil or general inexpensive "Sketching" pencil
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Plastic eraser

Instructor Bio: Linda Hope is a visual artist living and working in San Francisco, California, and has maintained a working studio on Hunters Point Shipyard for 40 years. Hope has been an instructor of painting and drawing from the live model for 29 years and has developed a unique approach to teaching. She incorporates demonstrations with guided and timed exercises in drawing from life or from the model, that are designed to expand and improve methods of observation. She is a strong advocate of observational and responsive drawing, always with the intention of guiding each student individually toward their own stylistic visual language.

Additionally, Hope studied mind-body meditation and has maintained a daily meditation practice for 18 years. Hope’s work is included in both private and public collections including AT&T, California Lawyers for the Arts, Embarcadero Center, Xerox Corporation, ABC/KGO Television and the United States Department of State, Washington DC.
