Drawing from Photographs

Saturdays, 9/20-10/18/2025, 11:00am-2:00pm

Location: OCEAN CAMPUS, room VART102

Instructor: Kara Maria

In this workshop students will learn how to create drawings from photographs. Techniques for translating printed and/or digital images (from phones, tablets, or laptops) into drawings will be demonstrated. We'll work with approaches to line, composition, form and value, positive and negative space, sighting, proportional measurement, use of grids, shading, tonal and volumetric indication, drawing mediums and tools, and how to hold and use the materials. For beginners and returning students!

Materials list:

Paper:
• Drawing pad (50-80lbs., regular surface, white, 9 x 12 inches or larger)
• sketchbook (5 x 7 inches or larger)
Drawing materials:
• graphite pencils – one of each: 2H, HB, 2B, 4B (or set of pencils)
• pencil sharpener
• erasers – one white plastic eraser and/or pink pearl eraser
• photos printed in black and white on 8.5 x 11 inch copy paper
• 12-inch (or longer) ruler
Other:
• disposable gloves (optional)
 

Instructor Bio: 

Kara Maria is a visual artist working in painting and mixed media. Her recent work reflects on Earth’s biodiversity crisis and the role of animals in our increasingly unstable environment. Maria received her BA and MFA from the University of California, Berkeley. She has previously taught at CCA, SFSU, UC Berkeley, SFAI, Santa Clara University, and St. Mary’s College – including adult education courses at SFAI and Anderson Ranch Arts Center.Maria’s work is included in the permanent collections of the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive; the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento; the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; the San Jose Museum of Art; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, among others. A native of Binghamton, New York, Kara Maria now lives and works in San Francisco, California.
