City Summer Youth Academy is for students ranging from incoming 6th graders through currently enrolled high school students. CSYA is underwritten by a generous grant from the Wells-Fargo Foundation.
Introduction to Manga Drawing 101
Monday-Friday 7/15-7/19/2024, 1:00pm-3:30pm, online
Instructor: Joyce Nojima

This virtual workshop will introduce students to the basics of manga (Japanese style comics/graphic novels) drawing. Our primary focus will be on, but not limited to, character development. We will learn to draw faces, bodies, poses, and character expressions. Our goal is to have students create their own unique character and begin the ground work for a solid script. No previous painting and drawing experience are required!

This will be a live synchronous course. Students will need a computer or smart phone with webcam and microphone, internet and web streaming capacity, and the Zoom application installed to their device.

- HB/2B pencil and sharpener

- *(1) Mechanical pencil*

- (1) Plastic eraser (example: Mono)

- (1) Brush tip black marker (Example: Copic)

- (1) Fine felt tip black pen (Example: Sakura Pigma Micron pens)

- (1) Straight Edged Ruler

- (1) Pad of Bristol paper (Smooth Surface, no smaller than 9" x 12")

- *(1) Sketch book* OR A few sheets of printer paper or scrap paper

- Any basic watercolor paint set OR *a basic set or anything similar to Copic or Copic Ciao Color Markers*

Instructor Bio:

Joyce Nojima is a second-generation Japanese American born and raised in Santa Rosa, California. She received her B.A. in Art Practice from University of California, Berkeley in 2003 and earned her MFA at University of California, Davis in 2014. She was an Affiliate Artist and Graduate Fellowship Program at the Headlands Center for the Arts. She was also a former studio artist at Root Division. She is currently an Art Instructor at SF City College, City Extension and Ruth's Table. And she is currently a teaching artist in residence at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.
