Full course description

This full day training is designed for workers, supervisors, and staff who have ongoing contact with system involved youth and who rely on strong communication and engagement skills to build trust, maintain relationships, and navigate conflict over time. While de escalation is addressed, the primary focus of this course is long term skill development that helps workers strengthen their relational toolbox so they can support youth across a range of emotional and developmental needs.

Participants explore how trauma, developmental stage, and chronic stress affect the way youth communicate and respond to challenging circumstances. The course also examines the workers own scripts, triggers, and patterns of behavior to improve self regulation and avoid escalating interactions. Through demonstrations, hands on practice, and case based role plays, trainees learn how to use mirroring, paraphrasing, motivational interviewing questions, reflecting the core message, and affect labeling to enhance connection and reduce intensity. A key component of the training includes understanding how a youths lagging skills contribute to blow ups and how this framework can be used as a methodology for ongoing discussion, collaborative problem solving, and skill development with youth. By the end of the day, workers leave with practical tools, increased confidence, and strategies that build resilience for both staff and youth.
