Mar 10, 2026 - Mar 10, 2026
Instructor: Todd Wright
Full course description
Participants will examine real-world scenarios involving parents, youth, foster caregivers, and extended family during monthly contacts, home visits, and team meetings. The course explores how the brain's emotional and rational states impact communication and conflict, and how to adjust strategies accordingly. Through discussion, video analysis, small-group work, and skill-building exercises, participants will practice using reflective tools such as mirroring, paraphrasing, affect labeling, solution-focused questions, and core message reflection to defuse tension and build rapport. The role of tactical empathy, communication styles, and bias awareness will be addressed, along with practical tools for engaging families under stress. This course introduces the LEADS five-step de-escalation process and serves as a foundational training for a broader curriculum that includes family engagement, older youth de-escalation, and conflict resolution.
