Our society is experiencing unprecedented levels of anxiety and stress. COVID 19 is a primary source of anxiety with people reporting increased symptoms during the pandemic. Discrimination has been an ongoing source of stress for racial minorities, women, and LGBTQ populations in our society. COVID 19 and racial disparities have compounded stress levels experienced by culturally diverse populations. Recent events related to the war in Ukraine, inflation and economic stress have further increased levels of anxiety. This course takes a comprehensive look at anxiety disorders and stress, the impact on diverse populations, and increased challenges during COVID 19 and recent events.

Primary anxiety disorders are reviewed including phobias, social anxiety, panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder with the impact of COVID 19 and treatment approaches discussed. Research by the American Psychological Association (APA) on the impact of discrimination on stress in racial minorities, women, and LGBTQ individuals is presented. Information and data on COVID 19 and racial disparities is provided. Reports on Stress in America in 2021 and 2022 (APA) are also presented including recent data on the impact of the war in Ukraine, rising inflation, and economic stress. Self-care strategies for coping with stress are also be reviewed. Group discussions focus on the stressors in our lives and the youth and families we serve as well as on self-care during these challenging times. Participants will develop an Individual Self Care Plan.
