This training supports participants in understanding child development through the lived reality of autism. Participants will examine how sensory processing shapes a child’s communication and social development before diagnosis, during diagnosis, and after adults begin to understand what they are seeing. The training invites a paradigm shift away from judging autistic development through neurotypical expectations. Participants will explore how physiology and neurology affect emotional development for autistic SIY. The focus is on helping adults interpret development with more accuracy, humility, and respect. Participants will be able to identify three ways sensory processing may affect autistic child development. Participants will be able to explain two ways neurotypical expectations can distort adult understanding of autistic youth. Participants will be able to apply two autism-informed observations when considering a youth’s communication or developmental capacity.
