Substance use among adolescents is often connected to underlying experiences such as trauma, grief, mental health challenges, adverse childhood experiences, and disruptions in attachment. Youth involved in the child welfare system may be at increased risk for substance use while also facing barriers to treatment and recovery. This interactive training provides caregivers and professionals with practical strategies to recognize warning signs of substance use disorders, respond with empathy and curiosity rather than punishment, and strengthen protective factors that promote resilience and recovery. Participants will leave with actionable tools to support youth, foster trusting relationships, and collaborate effectively with families, treatment providers, schools, and community partners.
