This course reviews current information on LGBTQQI youth of color, transgender youth, systems involved youth, youth risk behaviors, and the role of genetics.
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, and intersex youth and young adults face extensive challenges in developing a positive identity, gaining acceptance and support, and making a successful transition to adulthood. This course reveiws LGBTQQI youth development, the coming out process, and issues impacting youth of color and transgender youth. Psychosocial risk factors are reveiewed including family rejection, school safety, peer bullying, depression, suicide, and HIV. New information is presented on LGBTQQI youth of color, transgender youth, systems involved youth, youth risk behaviors, and the role of genetics in sexual orientation. Group discussion focuses on experiences working with LGBTQQI youth. Individual and family counseling approaches are presented along with residential care best practice guidelines. Information on how to support youth in improving their outcomes and makig a successful transition to adulthoood is reviewed and community resources are provided. We can make a positive difference in the lives of LGBTQQI youth and young adults.
